Churros with hot chocolate sauce

Hi Guys!!

So, today I had a friend come over to watch some old movies.

A couple of days earlier, we were talking about some of the movies we'd like to watch over and over again. He mentioned 'The Hobbit'- 'The  battle of five armies' and funny enough, I hadn't seen that one. I know it came out towards the end of 2014, and I probably told myself I'll wait for the laptop version. I just never got around to finding or watching the laptop version either, but I remember seeing it on Netflix. I've got a beautiful 40'' samsung smart TV in my place, so we decided to call it a date.

I decided to make some churros and chocolate sauce as our snack for the movie. Fortunately, here in the UK, you bring your own drink with you when coming over to a friends place, so I wasn't bothered about what  he would drink (even though I would have offered juice or water).

Churros and chocolate dip, to me are the perfect snack. They make for a fun or romantic date food, especially when u both play with the chocolate sauce, and of course, you can always make funny shapes with them, and share the longer pieces with each other.

So heres how I made it.

Ingredients
For the churros
  • 1/2 cup of all purpose flour
  • 1/2 cup of self raising flour
  • 1 tsp of butter
  • 1 egg
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
  • A pinch of salt
  • 1 tbsp of sugar
  • 200mls of water
  • 1 tbsp of cinnamon
  • 2 tbsp of caster sugar (granulated sugar is an alternative)
For the chocolate sauce
  • A bar of milk chocolate
  • 5 tbsp of cream
  • 1 tbsp of butter
Instructions
  1. Pre-heat your oven to 180 degrees celsius, and line the baking tray with parchment/ baking paper, and set aside.
  2. Place the water in a pot and bring to a boil. Add the butter and allow it to melt in the boiling water.
Buter in a pan of boiling water
  3. Add the salt and sugar to the water, and stir. Then add the 2 types of flour, and stir continuously until it forms a dough that just comes off the sides of the pot. Now remove the pot from the heat.

  4. Add the egg, vanilla extract and mix very well.

  5. Transfer  the dough mixture into a piping bag with a star nozzle.

  6. Pipe the dough on to the baking tray into the different shapes you want, and  spray with some cooking spray.

  7. Transfer into the oven, and allow to bake for 12-15 minutes, or until its golden brown.

  8. In a dry bowl or plate, mix the cinnamon and sugar together and set aside.

  9. Combine the chocolate sauce ingredients together, and microwave in 10 second intervals until the chocolate is dissolved and glossy.
  10. Remove the churros from the oven and dust them with the cinnamon sugar. Serve with the chocolate sauce and Enjoy!
Tips
  1. When you add the egg, the dough might look like its about to split, but just keep mixing it, it would come back to shape.
  2. An alternative to baking the churros in an oven is to pipe them directly into hot frying oil. But be very careful.
  3. When warming the chocolate in the microwave, be careful not to burn the it, as this would render the chocolate useless.
